Annual Assembly 2008

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Honored Guest Speaker:
His Excellency Metropolitan Kallistos Ware

"To look forward, one must look at the past. St. Nicolai (Velimirovich) of Zica called Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich the greatest missionary of our time. We should be working as Fr. Sebastian did. He is a witness to the universality of the Orthodox Church and our example. We seek what is good in our heritage but we need unity in our diversity." "Ask: What is the distinctive function of the Church? What can the Church do that cannot be done by anyone else? Answer: We bear witness to Jesus Christ Savior - crucified and Risen from the dead PLUS the Church makes available to us SALVATION in Christ." "How does salvation become available? Through the celebration of our Divine Liturgy. To celebrate the Eucharist the Church fulfills itself in space and time through the Eucharist. The Church makes the Eucharist. The Eucharist makes the Church. This is the Body of the Church." "Ask: What holds the Church together? Answer: It is created from within by Communion with the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ." "In I Corinthians, St. Paul compares us to a loaf of bread. We are one body, all partakers of one loaf, therefore, one in the Body of Christ. This results in cause and connection being given. There is an ancient Eucharistic Prayer from Syria. 'As this broken bread was scattered on the mountain and brought together, so, too, from all ends of the earth together, to one, in God." "St. Ignatius reminded us to be careful to use: 1 cup + 1 loaf + 1 Alter + 1 Bishop. This is the essential connection of Eucharist and ONE Body of Christ." "If Orthodox people put the Eucharist in the Center, then we have a future in the United States. Prayerfully come to the Sacrament of Communion. It is more important than fund raising or meetings." "Our greatest 20Th century Theologians: George Florovsky, Russian, Metropolitan Jonas of Pergulun, Greek, Justin Popovic, Serbian -- consequences of their collective vision -- Divine Liturgy gathers ALL together in one place. Therefore, we are organized FIRST on a Eucharistic level SECOND on a national loyalties level. Follow the example of Fr. Sebastian Dabovich." Advice Metropolitan Kallistos gave to the gathering. "First: Congregationalism needs to be avoided. You need the Bishop's blessing. Your Bishop needs to have your support and willingness to help him from his various parishes. Second: St. Theodore Studite said, 'Monks are the glue of the Church.' If there are no monastics - we suffer. There is a notable revival of monasticism in the last 20 years, this is a traditional movement, not fanatical. Third: Do not underestimate ethnic backgrounds. They are beautiful IF used correctly. Solzhenitsyn emphasized that each group has special gifts. At Pentecost we found the tongues of different nations were heard. The MIRACLE of PENTECOST was: each spoke in their own national tongue and all understood each other. Ethnic diversity was abolished and not a break. Unity in diversity! The Holy Spirit unites us to allow each to serve in his own tongue, his own tradition. We need to live out our ethnicity in an inclusive way -- share the living water. Because of the Divine Liturgy we will grow."
