In response to the disastrous record flooding and terrible suffering of thousands of families in Serbia, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the whole Balkan region, and the communiqué of our diocesan bishop, His Grace, Bishop Maxim, on Friday, May 22, 2014, Saint Steven’s Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Alhambra, California wired $25,000 USD to the "Patriarch Pavle Fund” special account for the rehabilitation of the effects of these natural disasters as established by the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
In his letter to His Holiness, Patriarch Irinej, Cathedral Dean, Fr. Nikola Ceko expressed the assurance to His Holiness, as to all the people of our homeland and fatherland, “of our unity and prayerful support during yet another difficult time of suffering and tragedy for our people. As an expression love and unity, this immediate action is the first step in Saint Steven’s Cathedral parish efforts to provide assistance to our brothers and sisters in time of great need.”
Additionally, Saint Steven’s Cathedral, in conjunction with International Orthodox Christian Charities, (I.O.C.C.) will host a special public Humanitarian Relief Event on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Cathedral in Alhambra as part of its annual Vidovdan Commemoration and Endowment Recognition Day. Event honorary hosts will be Sasha Alexander from the popular TV show Rizzoli & Isles, and husband, writer/ director Edoardo Ponti, with other celebrities participating. Keynote speaker will be Mark Gruin, IOCC Director of Strategic Initiatives who is currently in Serbia overseeing the I.O.C.C. relief efforts in the region. Reservations for the event may be made through the mail or on-line at the reservation center http:// www.saintstevens.org/donate/humanitarian-event.htm.
We continue our efforts in prayer and service, trusting that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is always in our midst, and will provide for us as we provide for one another. As Fr. Nikola stated, “in this time of tragedy, we express our solidarity with His Holiness, Patriarch Irinej and all of the hierarchs, clergy and all people in the region, and greet them during these Paschal days with the most joyous greeting “Christ is Risen” and with the certitude that Christ’s resurrection extends to all people, and those who suffer receive it first of all.”
Saint Steven’s Cathedral has also set up an on-line donation opportunity through PayPal at the websitehttp://www.saintstevens.org/donate/flood-relief-fund.html
