By the Grace of God
Orthodox Bishop of Western America
Grace, Peace and Mercy from the God-Child Christ the Savoir

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and His Name shall be called THE ANGEL OF GREAT COUNCIL,
Wonderful Councelor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
(Isaih 9:6)

We lift up our hearts to Things Above as we praise our Savior, the Angel of Great Council, who grants us peace and heals every division in His creation. With Him, every expression of joy over life, of wonderment over the unknown, the desire to transcend death, and to seek justice for suffering people - especially in Kosovo and Syria - continue to exist and are brought into sharper focus.

By sending you our Festal greetings and prayerful wishes along with our gratitude for your support, we want to say how much we appreciate your support of our Diocese this year!
May God bless you and your families!

The House That Miladin Built

From Sunrise to Sunset Avenue, heading west along one of those gorgeous, tree-lined streets that you find all throughout the cozy community of Fair Oaks, look to your right after passing the sign for the cemetery. Turn your gaze upward toward the heavens. You will suddenly gasp as you see one of the most impressive and elegant examples of Eastern Orthodox Church architecture that you’ve ever seen on the West Coast. You will behold the house that Miladin built.

Since he arrived in 1960, Fr. Miladin Garic was the spiritual force behind the Serbian Orthodox community in the east Sacramento region. Fr. Miladin fell asleep in the Lord on Nov. 24th, 2015, and now lies next to his beloved wife, Nina, in a churchyard on a peaceful hillside facing the very first Serbian Orthodox Church in America, in Jackson, where he also served as priest for several years. Such was the life of this dynamic churchman, affectionately called “Proto Garic” by his flock, that Jesus’ words immediately come to mind: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Annual Meeting of the Central Council held at Chicago

Central Church Council 13 of 17Chicago, IL -  The Central Church Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America held its annual meeting on Friday, December 11, 2015 at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago and continued the following day with the Holy Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at St. Sava Monastery in Libertyville, on the feast of St. Mardarije of Libertyville and America and Canada. This was the first Divine Liturgy in which the first Bishop of America and Canada, Mardarije, was commemorated after being added to the list of Saints at the regular meeting of the Holy Assembly of Bishops held in May.

Participating in the meeting of the Central Council were all the hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America, led by His Eminence Metropolitan Amphilohije of Montenegro and the Coastlands, His Grace Bishop Longin of New Gracanica and Midwestern America, His Grace Bishop Mitrophan of Eastern America and His Grace Bishop Maxim of Western America. Representing the Canadian Diocese were V. Rev. Stavrophor Vasilije Tomic, the Episcopal Deputy for the diocesan administrator His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej and Fr. Jovan Marjanac, parish priest in Sudbury, Canada.
