Studenica Monastery 12th-20th century, view from the south-west

The sites chosen for the building of monasteries were selected with great care. The lie of the land influenced the layout of the monastery. At Studenica a circular plan was adopted, with the main church in the center. The outer wall in the eastern half is not truly circular, but this does not detract from the clarity of the original concept.
